Russian and U.S. leaders have not dismissed the idea of a future summit, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. While President Trump has paused plans for such a meeting, he recently indicated it could still happen. Peskov emphasized that no dates have been set and both leaders want any talks to be meaningful, not symbolic.
He noted that groundwork by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is essential before any summit can take place.
On Ukraine, Peskov described peace negotiations as stalled, blaming Kyiv’s reluctance and influence from European allies. He also clarified that President Putin’s warning of a “stunning response” was a general statement, not tied to specific weapons like Tomahawk missiles.
Regarding new Western sanctions, Russia is reviewing its options and will act based on national interests. Echoing Trump’s stance, the Kremlin plans to reassess the impact of these sanctions in six months.
Peskov also addressed Japan’s interest in a peace treaty, saying Russia shares the goal but talks have halted due to past unfriendly actions by Tokyo.
