Cape Verde Continue Fairytale Run, Hold Uruguay After Stunning Spain

Cape Verde’s remarkable FIFA World Cup campaign continued on Sunday as the tournament debutants held two-time world champions Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in a Group H encounter in Florida.

After earning a shock goalless draw against European champions Spain in their opening match, the African nation produced another impressive performance, claiming a valuable point against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.

The result was particularly significant for Cape Verde, who scored the first World Cup goals in their history and once again defied expectations on football’s biggest stage.

Despite Uruguay dominating possession and creating the majority of chances, it was Cape Verde who struck first in the 21st minute. João Pina unleashed a stunning free-kick from approximately 32 yards out, beating the Uruguayan defense and goalkeeper to register the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal.

Uruguay responded with relentless pressure. Federico Valverde came close on several occasions, while Manuel Ugarte and Ronald Araújo also squandered opportunities as Marcelo Bielsa’s side searched for an equalizer.

The breakthrough eventually arrived when Araújo headed home from close range after Rodrigo Bentancur’s deflected header floated dangerously across the goalmouth.

Uruguay completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time. Araújo was again heavily involved, helping create the opportunity that allowed Agustín Canobbio to finish from close range and give La Celeste a 2-1 lead heading into the interval.

However, Cape Verde refused to surrender.

The equalizer came in the 61st minute following a costly defensive error by Uruguay. Defender Mathías Olivera misplaced a pass deep inside his own half, leaving the defense exposed. Substitute Varela seized the opportunity, calmly controlling the ball before rounding goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and slotting into an empty net.

The goal proved decisive as Uruguay failed to find a winner despite sustained pressure during the closing stages.

For Cape Verde, the draw felt almost as valuable as a victory. After frustrating Spain and now taking a point from Uruguay, the “Blue Sharks” have emerged as one of the biggest surprise stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The result keeps Cape Verde’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive while raising fresh questions about Uruguay’s ability to convert dominance into victories.
