A total of Tk 2,110 crore worth of corruption occurred in 891 projects in the climate sector from 2010 to 2024.
The estimated amount of corruption committed in 891 projects between 2010 and 2024 is $248.4 million, which is approximately Tk 2,106 crore.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman gave this information at a press conference organized by TIB in the capital’s Dhanmondi on Tuesday around 11:30 am.
The report said that a total of $458.5 million was approved from the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCT) between 2010 and 2024. Of this, 54 percent was estimated to have been corrupt. A trend of project approvals due to collusion and political considerations among members of the Board of Trustees and Technical Committee has been observed. However, as the fund manager, BCCT officials have failed to take effective steps to prevent these irregularities.
Bangladesh needs $12.5 billion annually to combat climate change. But from 2015 to 2023, an average of only $86.2 million has been allocated annually from national and international funds, which is only 0.7 percent of the need.
Allocations from national funds are decreasing at an average rate of 8.2 percent per year, while allocations from international funds have increased at a rate of 43.8 percent.
