Brazil faces its first such crisis in 9 years

Asian powerhouse Japan has never beaten five-time world champions Brazil in 13 matches before. Their highest success was a draw in 2 matches. However, Japan beat Brazil 3-2 for the first time in a friendly match in this October window. Considering the first win and loss, the match is historic for both teams. The result has been achieved by Carlo Ancelotti’s disciples. They have fallen to their lowest position in the FIFA rankings in the last 9 years.

Brazil toured Asia in the October window. Carlo Ancelotti’s team started the tour by thrashing South Korea 5-0. But they stumbled against Japan in the next match. After taking a double lead in the first half, the Seleção lost to Japan for the first time, conceding three goals in the second half. Coach Ancelotti, however, is still looking for his preferred combination in the Brazil squad. As a result, he seems to be giving opportunities to new players in various positions.

Brazil has dropped to seventh in the FIFA rankings after losing to Japan. This is the lowest position for the former world champions since August 2016. After falling one place in the last updated FIFA rankings, Brazil had fallen to sixth. This time, they have fallen another place with 1758.85 points. Earlier in August 2016, Brazil had dropped to ninth place with 1156 points. However, the Seleção have never dropped below sixth in the next nine years. This is the first time they have been in such a back-footed position.

Earlier, however, Brazil had the worst performance in the history of World Cup qualifiers this time. They are going to play in the 2026 World Cup after finishing fifth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers. At the end of the qualifiers, the Seleção have 28 points with 8 wins, 4 draws and 6 losses in 18 matches. Where Brazil’s success rate is 51 percent. Which is the lowest in their qualification history. 55.6 percent success was before the 2002 World Cup. Although Brazil was fortunate enough to become their fifth and last world champion in that tournament. Apart from that, Brazil has not had a success rate of less than 63 percent in any tournament’s qualification.

Meanwhile, Spain has retained its top spot in the world football rankings. In addition, current world champion Argentina has improved one place and former world champion France has deteriorated one place to be in second and third place respectively. England and Portugal remain unchanged at 4-5 respectively. Brazil has a chance to drop to 7th place, with Belgium moving up one place to 6th. Belgium is in 8th place, Italy is one place up, and Germany has moved up two places to 10th place.

Bangladesh has improved one step in this year’s ranking. Hamza-Jamal have moved up from 184th to 183rd. Bangladesh played two home and away matches against Hong Kong in the Asian Cup qualifiers in FIFA’s October window. Despite losing 4-3 at home, the red-green team drew 1-1 in the away match. Hong Kong is 38 steps ahead of Bangladesh in the ranking. Bangladesh has increased its points by drawing on their soil.
