A young man drowned in the Turag River on Thursday night while fleeing from locals after allegedly setting fire to a bus in Dhaka’s Mirpur Beribadh area. Another youth was caught by residents and handed over to police, while a third suspect managed to escape.

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm in front of Tamanna Park in the Mirpur Beribadh area. The deceased has been identified as Saiyaf (18), and the arrested suspect as Rudra Mohammed Nahian Amir Sani (18).

The information was confirmed in a press statement issued by Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media & Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

According to the Shah Ali Police Station, a group of youths set fire to an empty Kiranmala Paribahan bus parked near Sohel Engineering Workshop in Uttar Nababerbagh. They reportedly poured kerosene from plastic bottles and ignited the fire while recording the act on their mobile phones.

As soon as locals spotted the flames and the youths’ activities, they chased them. One of the suspects jumped into the nearby Turag River in an attempt to escape but drowned as he did not know how to swim. Residents later rescued him in critical condition and rushed him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, another youth was caught red-handed and handed over to police, while one suspect managed to flee the scene.

Shah Ali Police Station is currently investigating the incident.
