UN backs proposal to form international force in Gaza

The United Nations Security Council has passed a US draft resolution supporting US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan on the Palestinian Gaza issue.

Thirteen member states of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, but Gaza’s ruling party Hamas rejected it outright, the British media outlet BBC reported on Tuesday (November 18).

The UN Security Council has voted in favor of a US draft resolution based on Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to resolve the Gaza crisis, the media outlet reported. The plan calls for the creation of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) for Gaza.

The United States said that several countries have expressed interest in sending members to this force, but the names of the countries were not disclosed. In the Security Council vote, 13 countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Somalia, voted in favor of the resolution. No country opposed it. However, Russia and China abstained from voting.

However, Hamas has rejected the proposal, claiming it does not meet Palestinian demands for rights. In a statement on Telegram, Hamas said the plan “imposes international guardianship” on Gaza, which the Palestinian people and their various factions are unwilling to accept.

The statement also said that giving international forces responsibilities inside Gaza — such as disarming resistance groups — would remove these forces from a neutral position.

According to the draft, a key responsibility of the ISF will be to “permanently disable the weapons of non-state armed groups,” including Hamas, as well as to ensure the protection of civilians and secure humanitarian aid routes.

And for this, according to Trump’s peace plan, Hamas will have to surrender its weapons. It has also been mentioned that the ISF will work in coordination with Israel and Egypt. At the same time, it has also been said that a newly trained Palestinian police will be formed in Gaza. Although the police force has been under Hamas’ control until now.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said the ISF’s mission would be to “secure the area, demilitarize Gaza, dismantle terrorist infrastructure, remove weapons, and ensure the safety of Palestinian civilians.”
