Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called on the government to revamp the draft of the ‘Police Commission Ordinance, 2025’ to ensure the real independence and effectiveness of the proposed Police Commission. The organization made this call in a press release today (Wednesday, November 5).
It said otherwise the ordinance risks establishing government dominance over the Police Commission and turning the commission into a workplace for former bureaucrats and police officers.
The TIB said in a statement that the interim government has not yet published the draft of the ordinance, although it has finalized it. However, the TIB has learned about the draft from reliable sources.
TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, “The way the commission has been proposed to be formed with a retired bureaucrat and two policemen among the seven members, there is a risk that the commission will become a center for rewarding the loyalty of the former and will be transformed into an organization under the executive branch of the government.”
He said, “In this case, in light of international best practices, the opportunity for former and current bureaucrats and police officers to be included as members should be abolished and a provision should be included to form a commission consisting of impartial experts, university teachers, and researchers on matters related to justice, law, law enforcement, human rights, and good governance.”
