Shibir-backed panel wins big in CUCSU polls

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel “Sampriti’r Shikkharthi Jote” has secured a major victory in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) elections, held after a gap of 35 years.

According to the results announced around 4am on Thursday, Shibir-supported candidates won both the VP and GS posts, while the AGS post went to a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal(JCD)-backed candidate.

For the VP post, Sampriti’r Shikkharthi Jote candidate Md Ibrahim Hossain Roni secured 7,983 votes. His closest rival, Chhatra Dal panel’s Sajjad Hossain Hridoy, received 4,373 votes.

For the GS post, the same panel’s candidate Saeed Bin Habib garnered 8,031 votes, while his nearest contender, Chhatra Dal’s Md Shafayet Hossain, received 2,649 votes.

Meanwhile, for the AGS post, Chhatra Dal-supported candidate Aiyubur Rahman Tawfiq won with 6,986 votes, while Shibir’s Sajjad Hossain Munna obtained 5,083 votes.

Voting concluded at 4pm, followed by overnight counting, and the results were announced around 4am. The counting process was displayed live on LED screens installed at 14 points across the campus. Soon after the announcement, supporters of the winning panel burst into celebration.

However, tension arose on campus over the declaration of results. Activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir took positions facing each other near Gate No. 1. Both groups stood in small clusters, but no untoward incident occurred, police said. Additional security forces have been deployed across the campus.

This CUCSU election, held after 35 years, saw voting at 15 centres. Out of 27,516 eligible voters, 17,717 cast their ballots—making the turnout 65 percent.

Chief Election Commissioner Professor Monir Uddin shared the turnout figures on Wednesday night.

He said that at the IT Centre, 2,908 out of 4,036 voters cast their ballots; at the Science Centre, 3,099 out of 4,558; at the BBA Centre, 4,279 out of 7,068; at the Social Science Centre, 3,773 out of 6,604; and at the Arts Faculty Centre, 3,619 out of 5,263 voters cast their votes.

Additionally, at a special booth set up at the CUCSU building for students with disabilities, 39 out of 78 registered voters exercised their voting rights.
