Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has urged the Election Commission to extend the ongoing voter registration period by 15 more days to ensure the voting rights of expatriate Bangladeshis.

Speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport upon his return from a 15-day foreign visit on Tuesday, Dr. Rahman said many expatriates were unable to register due to software issues and other complications during the initial deadline, which ended on October 30.

“We thank the government and the Election Commission for taking the initiative to include expatriates in the voter list for the first time on such a large scale. However, many could not complete their registration despite sincere efforts,” he said.

Dr. Rahman urged the EC to simplify the registration process, saying, “A citizen’s NID and a valid passport should be enough to prove eligibility. The existing conditions should be relaxed so that no expatriate is deprived of their right to vote.”

The Jamaat chief recently concluded visits to Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye, where he met government officials, community leaders, and expatriate Bangladeshis.

He said expatriates have long contributed to the country’s democratic movement and should be given due participation in the governance process.

“The dream is for expatriates to take part in the country’s political and parliamentary affairs through the PR system. It may take time, but it will be ensured, Insha’Allah,” Dr. Rahman added.

He also emphasized maintaining “respectful and equal relations” with all nations, noting that he received appreciation abroad for representing Bangladesh’s interests.

Meanwhile, political activities are intensifying ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, expected in February 2026. The BNP recently named potential candidates for 237 constituencies, while the National Citizens Party (NCP) has formed a Central Election Management Committee to coordinate its election strategy.
