Even if Sheikh Hasina is sentenced to death a thousand times, it will be less: Mir Snigdha

Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdha, brother of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdha, a martyr in the July Movement, has said that the wrongs committed by Sheikh Hasina will be reduced even if she is sentenced to death a thousand times. He said this while talking to reporters in front of the International Crimes Tribunal this morning (Monday, November 17).

The verdict in the case filed against Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising is being announced today. Snigdha arrived at the tribunal gate at 10:12 am before the verdict was announced. At that time, she told reporters, “The people of Bangladesh have already given their verdict on August 5. Now, the verdict is only to be officially announced by the court.”

Expressing his expectation that Sheikh Hasina will be sentenced to death in the verdict, Mir Snigdha said, “Of course, we expect the death penalty, and the injustice that Sheikh Hasina has committed will be less if she is sentenced to death not just once, but a thousand times.”

Security has been beefed up around the International Crimes Tribunal and its surrounding areas ahead of the verdict. Police, RAB, BGB and army members have been deployed in front of the tribunal. The verdict will be broadcast live from the courtroom of International Crimes Tribunal-1.

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, will pronounce the verdict in the case. The other two members of this tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

During the hearing of this case, the prosecution (state party) has repeatedly stated that Sheikh Hasina was the mastermind (planner), order-giver, and superior commander (supreme commander) of all crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.

The main accused in the case is ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The other two accused are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Of the three accused, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are absconding and are currently residing in India.
