Dry cough at night? Know the home remedies

A dry cough irritates the throat but does not produce mucus or phlegm. It usually occurs after an infection like a cold or flu. Coughing all night is uncomfortable, disrupts sleep, and gradually puts pressure on the throat. Cough medicines will give you temporary relief, but it is better to opt for natural and tried-and-tested home remedies . These soothe the throat and help stop coughing. Simple ingredients like honey, turmeric, ginger, and mint leaves help reduce inflammation, moisturize the airways, and heal faster.

Honey

Honey is one of the most effective natural remedies for soothing a dry cough. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help coat the throat, reduce irritation, and help suppress the cough. A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that honey was more effective than dextromethorphan in reducing nighttime coughs in children.

You can eat a teaspoon of honey a few times a day or mix it with lukewarm water. However, honey should never be given to babies under one year old, as it carries the risk of infant botulism.

Yellow

Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful compound with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial benefits. It is widely used in the treatment of respiratory problems such as bronchitis and asthma. A study published in Frontiers in Immunology discusses the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin, which contribute to its therapeutic effects in treating various health problems, including respiratory problems.

Turmeric should be taken with a pinch of cayenne pepper to maximize absorption. Add a teaspoon of turmeric and a small amount of cayenne pepper to hot milk, tea, or orange juice. Consuming it regularly will help reduce inflammation associated with throat irritation and dry cough.

Ginger

Ginger is known for its immune-boosting, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps soothe throat irritation and relieves coughing attacks.

Ginger tea is particularly effective. Simply soak a piece of peeled ginger in hot water for a few minutes. Adding honey enhances both its flavor and healing properties. It can be chewed raw for quick relief.

Mint leaves

Peppermint is rich in menthol, which acts as a natural decongestant and cough suppressant. It helps numb the nerve endings in the throat, reducing the urge to cough and congestion. Peppermint tea is a relaxing way to enjoy these benefits, especially before bed.

Inhaling the vapor mixed with peppermint oil or using it in a diffuser can also provide relief.
