The population and area of the capital Dhaka are constantly increasing. As a result, Dhaka has risen from ninth place to become the second largest city in the world. A new United Nations report has said that Dhaka will move to the first place in the list of large cities by 2050. Al Jazeera confirmed the matter in a report on Wednesday (November 26).
Previously, the Japanese capital Tokyo was at the top of the world’s largest cities. However, Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has surpassed Tokyo to become the largest city. Dhaka is in second place, and Tokyo has dropped to third place. The United Nations last identified Tokyo as the largest city in 2000. This time, Jakarta has surpassed them.
According to UN data, 41.9 million people now live in Jakarta, 36.6 million in Dhaka, and 33.4 million in Tokyo.
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ report titled ‘World Urbanization Prospects 2025’ says that the number of megacities worldwide is now 33, up from just eight in 1975. Cities with more than 10 million people are called megacities. Of these 33 megacities, 19 are in Asia. Nine of the top 10 megacities are also located in Asia.
These cities include New Delhi, India (32 million), Shanghai, China (29.6 million), Guangzhou, China (27.6 million), Manila, Philippines (24.7 million), Kolkata, India (22.5 million), and Seoul, South Korea (22.5 million).
Of these, only Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is one of the top 10 megacities outside Asia, with a population of 32 million.
The largest city in the Americas is São Paulo, Brazil (18.9 million inhabitants), and the largest city in the sub-Saharan region is Lagos, Nigeria.
The United Nations says the main reason for Dhaka’s population growth is the influx of people from remote areas to the capital, some in search of work or opportunity, while others have migrated to the capital to avoid the risk of flooding and rising sea levels.
