The general meeting and elections of the traditional organization Council of Mosques were held at the London Muslim Center on Saturday (18 November 2025) at noon. The ‘Council of Mosques’, formed with the aim of enhancing professional standards in mosques in the Tower Hamlets borough and assisting in their operation in accordance with institutional rules and regulations, has been providing valuable services to the community for almost a century and a half.
At the event, which was moderated by the organization’s General Secretary Sirajul Islam Hira, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets Council Lutfur Rahman highly praised the overall activities of the Council of Mosques and said that the leaders of this organization, including the chairman and secretary, are helpful in the professional and institutional prosperity of the mosques in our borough. He congratulated all the members of the Council of Mosques Board of Directors for contributing to the development of the community through various projects with the Council.
The Board of Directors of the Council of Mosques includes renowned Islamic scholars, government and private officials, public representatives and people from various classes and professions. Hafez Maulana Shamsul Haque, a degree holder from the University of Medina, has been serving as the chairman with unanimous consent since the inception of the organization. This time too, he has been elected as the chairman. At the same time, General Secretary Sirajul Islam Hira and Treasurer Abdul Munim Carroll have been re-elected. The newly elected members include Senior Vice-Chairman Alhaj Farooq Ahmed, Vice-Chairman Muhammad Shamsul Haque, Deputy Secretary Mahfuz Rob, Executive Members Muhammad Atiq Mia, Basir Ahmad, Nurul Ullah, Nurul Amin, Musleh Uddin, Maulana Musleh Uddin, Itawar Hossain Mujib, Arju Mia, Mohin Uddin Majumder and Ataur Rahman.
The election was conducted by Tower Hamlets Council Executive Mayor Lutfur Rahman. He was assisted by organization officials Azam Khan and Koyesh Ahmed. The meeting was attended by Tower Hamlets Deputy Mayor Councillor Mayum Mia Talukder, East London Mosque Chairman Dr. Abdul Hai Murshed, Chairman of Darul Ummah Mosque Barrister Ahmed Malik, Vice Chairman of Hackney Road Shahparan Mosque Noor Baksh, Chairman of Baitul Aman Mosque Abdul Bari and leaders of various mosque committees were present.
Presenting the annual report of the organization, Sirajul Islam Hira said that the ‘Council of Mosques’ has been conducting various works with great competence and dedication, including modernizing the mosques of Tower Hamlets, improving the quality of services, maintaining relations with the larger community in London’s multicultural society, developing religious values, and eliminating cultural and geographical differences. Treasurer Abdul Munim Carroll presented the annual accounts at the general meeting.
At the event, Chairman Hafez Maulana Shamsul Haque highlighted the multifaceted services of the Council of Mosques and expressed his desire to conduct more extensive activities in the future, saying that the Council of Mosques has worked with several partner organizations, including Tower Hamlets Council, to address many important issues of the community. He also said that meetings and seminars are held with partner organizations to raise awareness about local problems with members of different communities.
It is worth noting that the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has the largest number of mosques in Britain. Thousands of Muslims from different countries of the world live in this area. The Tower Hamlets Council of Mosques is formed by about fifty mosques here. The board of directors or committee manages the mosques and charities in accordance with the specific laws and rules of the regulatory body.
The Council of Mosques plays a supporting role in the management of mosques by creating competent leadership and training facilities for imams and Islamic teachers, mosque service workers and committee members, financial management and good governance training, managing children’s education in accordance with state regulations and protecting religious identity, health and safety, first aid, Charity Commission requirements, countering extremism and DBS testing, and many capacity building projects.
The organization has helped to develop a wide range of policies and procedures to deal with chaotic situations, adopt various strategies to de-escalate tensions, seminars on developing values and culture in Tower Hamlets, awareness seminars on caring for troubled youth and young people, seminars on understanding and empowering parents and children, seminars on current government policies on extremism and extremism and the Charity Commission Act, improve mosque-centered education administration and provide quality education in a safe environment.
