At least four Bangladeshis have died after two boats carrying migrants sank off the coast of Libya, the Libyan Red Crescent confirmed on Saturday evening (November 15) local time.

Al Jazeera reported on Sunday (November 16) that the first boat that sank was carrying 26 Bangladeshi migrants. The bodies of four of them have been recovered.

The Libyan Red Crescent said the second boat was carrying 69 migrants, including two Egyptians and several Sudanese nationals. There were also eight children on board, but it did not specify what happened to them.

The report said the two boat sinkings occurred off the coast of Al-Khums, about 118 kilometers east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

In a statement, the Red Crescent said the Coast Guard and Al-Khums Port Security Agency participated in the rescue operation. The bodies were handed over to the relevant authorities on the orders of the city’s public prosecution.

At least 42 migrants are missing after a boat sank near the Al Buri oil field, an offshore facility located north-northwest of the Libyan coast, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday. It is feared that everyone on board has died.

The bodies of 61 migrants were recovered off the west coast of Tripoli in mid-October. In September, the IOM said at least 50 people had died after a boat carrying 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off the coast of Libya.
