The United States has captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The Americans attacked various places including the country’s capital Caracas at midnight on Saturday (January 3). Hours later, President Donald Trump announced that Maduro and his wife were being captured and taken from Venezuela.
What happens now?
What happens next in Venezuela is still unclear. Al Jazeera reported that Maduro’s military may not want to give up power without negotiations. The military has not yet made an official comment on the capture and attack on the president.
Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is seeking to replace Maduro. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has offered her own position in place of Maduro. Machado hopes to form a government in Venezuela under her leadership with Western support. But most of those working against Maduro oppose US intervention.
In addition, the Chavezímo Movement, whose current leader is Nicolas Maduro, is still quite popular in Venezuela.
Experts fear that Venezuela could now descend into civil war or catastrophic conflict.
