UN Secretary-General responds to Pak-Afghan conflict

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an “immediate ceasefire” between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported on Saturday (February 28).

The report said that on Friday, the Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said that the Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the escalation of violence between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Secretary-General believes that this violence is having an impact on ordinary people. Therefore, he called for an immediate ceasefire and a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Last Thursday, when Pakistan launched airstrikes, Kabul retaliated. As a result, a bloody conflict began between the two countries. The Pakistani military claimed that 297 Taliban members have been killed so far in their ‘Operation Ghazab-Lil Haq’. On the other hand, Afghanistan has also reported the death of more than fifty Pakistani soldiers. The attacks and counterattacks are still ongoing intermittently.

The two countries declared war on Friday. Along with various accusations against each other, there was extreme tension throughout the day with attacks and counter-attacks. Many people were killed. This list also includes civilians. At the end of the day, let’s find out how many casualties each side claimed, and what the damage was like.

Musharraf Zaidi, the designated spokesman for Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for the foreign media, said that 297 Afghan forces were killed in the Pakistani operation. More than 450 were injured. In addition, 89 Afghan army posts and 135 tanks and armored vehicles were destroyed. Attacks were carried out in 29 places in the country.

On the other hand, a spokesman for the Taliban government in Afghanistan claimed that 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed in their attack. 19 Pakistani army posts were damaged in the attack.

In such a situation, US President Donald Trump has given a message of support to Pakistan. He said that Pakistan is doing extraordinarily well.

Asked whether he would intervene in the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, he said, “I can do it. You know, my relations with Pakistan are very good, very good.”
