US President Donald Trump has claimed to be the acting president of Venezuela, posting a screenshot of a photo on his social media account Truth Social.
The photo posted by Trump looks like a Wikipedia page. Below the photo, the title reads ‘Acting President of Venezuela’, ‘Incumbent January 2026’, meaning he will begin serving as acting president of Venezuela in January 2026.
The image, modeled after a Wikipedia page, shows Trump as the 45th and 47th President of the United States, taking office on January 20, 2025, with J.D. Vance as his Vice President.
In early January, US special forces Delta Force raided Venezuela on the orders of President Trump and captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Maduro was charged with drug trafficking and was brought to New York to face trial.
Trump did not seek congressional approval before carrying out this operation, which has sparked a storm of criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.
Vice President Delcy Rodriguez took over as interim president after the incident. However, Trump made it clear at a press conference in Florida after Maduro’s arrest that the United States would take responsibility for running Venezuela.
The US president also said that he had given a glimpse of this plan to major oil companies before launching a military operation in Venezuela.
In an interview with Fox News last week, Trump said he would allow elections in Venezuela, but not right away. He said Venezuela’s oil infrastructure must be rebuilt before the election.
According to a White House statement, Trump signed an executive order on Friday declaring a ‘national emergency’ to secure Venezuelan oil revenues in US Treasury accounts.
And now Trump has declared himself president. However, there has been no official response from Venezuelan authorities to Trump’s social media post.
