The interim government has decided to increase the house rent of private MPO teachers by 15 percent of their basic salary. However, this money will be given in two installments.
The decision was taken at a meeting of protesting teacher leaders with Education Advisor Professor C. R. Abrar on Tuesday (October 21).
In this regard, teacher leader Delwar Hossain Azizi said that the matter has been resolved amicably. He also assured that teachers will return to classes from Wednesday (October 22).
Khalid Mahmud, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, said, “Today is a truly historic moment for the education department. For teachers and employees under MPO, 7.5 percent rent (minimum two thousand taka) will be effective from November 1 of this year and 7.5 percent, a total of 15 percent rent, will be effective from July 2026. As a teacher, the education advisor considers himself fortunate to be able to ensure this allowance at the percentage rate as demanded by the respected teachers. He firmly believes that teachers deserve more respect and the state should strive to improve their standard of living.
He said, this path was not easy. There were various differences, debates, complaints, everything. Without answering any debate, the Ministry of Education has continuously worked towards a fair, sustainable solution. Behind the scenes, the Education Advisor and the Ministry have worked tirelessly with various ministries, advisory councils, and chief advisors. As if the demands of teachers were heard and understood. The Ministry believes that this is not a victory for anyone alone. It is a collective success. In addition, the teachers’ movement has made us understand the reality. The government has responded responsibly. And together, we have come to a position today where respect, dialogue, and compromise have won. Now is the time to return to the classroom. This is our real place of work for students. Let this compromise today be a new beginning with a commitment to mutual respect, understanding, and building education on a solid foundation. By respecting each other and spreading quality education, we can take Bangladesh to a place of dignity.
Teachers and employees of MPO-affiliated educational institutions are on a hunger strike to death at Shaheed Minar demanding three points, including a 20 percent rent increase. They have been protesting for 10 consecutive days. Representatives of various political parties, including BNP, Jamaat and NCP, have expressed solidarity with the teachers’ demands.
