Seguro wins landslide victory in Portugal’s presidential election

Center-left candidate Antonio José Seguro defeated right-wing rival André Ventura by a wide margin in Portugal’s presidential election on Sunday.

With more than 99 percent of the votes counted, Seguro, a 63-year-old Socialist Party candidate, won 66.8 percent of the vote, compared to Ventura’s 33.2 percent, making him the likely successor to conservative President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The election campaign was disrupted by two weeks of storms and strong winds, which killed at least seven people and caused about 4 billion euros ($4.7 billion) in damage.

Although voting was postponed by a week in about 20 constituencies most affected by the storm, voting was held in most places for about 11 million eligible voters in the country and abroad.

President-elect Seguro said, “Today’s winner is the Portuguese people and democracy.”

He vowed to be the leader of ‘all Portuguese’.

Ventura conceded defeat, saying his party had achieved the “best result” in history. “We are leading the right wing of Portugal and very soon we will govern this country,” he told supporters.

As soon as the results were released, European Union President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed them.
