Japan’s current Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s party has won a landslide victory in the country’s snap general election, with his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) securing more than two-thirds of the seats in the country’s lower house of parliament.
Preliminary results from state broadcaster NHK showed the LDP won 316 seats in the 465-seat lower house in Sunday’s election, far more than the 233 seats needed to form a government.
Media reports have reported the LDP’s victory. After receiving a glimpse of victory, Takaichi told reporters, “We have consistently emphasized the importance of responsible and proactive fiscal policies. We will prioritize the stability of fiscal policies. We will ensure necessary investment.”
However, the official announcement of the results is yet to be made.
Sanae Takaichi, who is widely popular but has ruled the LDP for most of seven decades, has been under pressure in recent years over funding fraud and religious scandals. He called a snap election just three months after taking office as prime minister to try to end the crisis.
