A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas after the quake struck on Monday night.
Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that a 40-centimeter tsunami hit the country’s coastal areas after the earthquake. The agency said that the Hokkaido region was shaken by a strong earthquake at around 11:15 p.m. local time.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. However, high-level tsunami waves have begun to hit various parts of the country’s coast. The country’s meteorological agency said a tsunami of up to three meters (10 feet) high could hit the Pacific coast.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said a strong 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck 73 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Misawa in northern Japan.
The earthquake, which struck at 11:15:11 p.m. local time in Japan, originated 53.1 kilometers below the surface. A high-level tsunami warning has been issued along the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures after the earthquake.
The country’s state broadcaster NHK said the tsunami could hit the port area from Aomori to Iwa around 11:40 p.m. local time.
