BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital with breathing difficulties due to a lung infection. Then pneumonia developed. Along with this, she has old problems of kidney, liver, arthritis and diabetes. As a result, the situation is such that treating one disease is having an adverse effect on another.

In such a situation, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described Khaleda Zia’s physical condition as ‘extremely critical’. BNP leaders say that her condition has not improved in the last two days. Doctors are considering taking her to Singapore as soon as possible for better treatment.

Meanwhile, Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, has expressed deep concern over Khaleda Zia’s current physical condition. He has sought prayers from the countrymen for Khaleda Zia. BNP held prayers and munajat in mosques across the country on Friday, wishing for her recovery.

Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital last Sunday. That day, she had severe breathing problems. She was quickly taken to Evercare Hospital. After various tests, her treatment started immediately. Her condition deteriorated.

Two days ago, she was shifted from the hospital cabin to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). Khaleda Zia is undergoing treatment there under the supervision of local and foreign specialist doctors of the Medical Board. The negative news about her physical condition has caused concern and anxiety among the leaders and workers.

The eldest son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, and daughter-in-law Dr. Zubaida Rahman, who are in London, are keeping a close eye on Khaleda Zia’s physical condition. Zubaida Rahman is a member of the medical board formed to treat Khaleda Zia. The younger son, Arafat Rahman Koko’s wife Shamila Rahman, is in the hospital with her mother-in-law Khaleda Zia.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam and BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury went to the hospital to see Khaleda Zia yesterday afternoon. They did not go inside the CCU. They came to see her from outside. Later, Amir Khasru told reporters waiting in front of Evercare Hospital, “We saw her from a distance. There is a risk of infection, so we cannot go to the CCU. We have spoken to the doctors. Madam’s condition is not improving. The medical board is trying.”

Sources said that a medical board consisting of local and foreign experts is meeting daily to provide treatment to Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda Zia was sentenced to prison in two cases during the Awami League government that was ousted in the July mass uprising. She was imprisoned for more than two years. On March 25, 2020, the then government suspended her sentence through an executive order and released her conditionally. After that, the government suspended her sentence and extended the period of her release after six months of consecutive applications. However, she was not allowed to go abroad for medical treatment.

Khaleda Zia was released after the Awami League government was overthrown in a mass uprising. She went to the UK for medical treatment on January 8. She returned to the country four months later on May 6.

The situation is ‘extremely critical’
BNP has been organizing prayers for Khaleda Zia across the country since she was admitted to the hospital after falling ill. Yesterday, there was a program of prayers and special prayers at the mosque. Mirza Fakhrul Islam participated in a special prayer for Khaleda Zia at the Nayapaltan Central Jama Masjid after Friday prayers yesterday. There, he mentioned that Khaleda Zia’s condition is very critical.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “Last night (Thursday) the doctors said that her physical condition is very critical. That is why, on behalf of our party, we sought prayers from the people of the whole country and from mosques across the country for the recovery of the leader of democracy, the mother of democracy, the national leader Begum Khaleda Zia. As part of that program, today (Friday) we all prayed at the Nayapaltan mosque and sought prayers from the Most Merciful Allah for the recovery of the national leader.”

The Secretary General said, “We have prayed to Allah Almighty to make Madam completely well, to return her to the people in good health and to give her the opportunity to work for the people of the country.” He added, “We are once again appealing to the people of the country to pray for her recovery. Everyone should pray for Madam.”

Earlier in the morning, at the biennial conference of the Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) at the National Press Club, Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the physical condition of the party chairperson and sought prayers from the countrymen through journalists.

The BNP Secretary General said, “Madam is sick and is at Evercare Hospital. I returned from the hospital at around 2 am yesterday (Thursday) night. The doctors were still trying and working.”

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that prayers were offered after Friday prayers in mosques across the country, including the capital, for Khaleda Zia’s recovery and recovery.

Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, has expressed deep concern over the current physical condition of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He has sought prayers from the countrymen for her.

The information was given in a message from the Chief Advisor’s press wing yesterday evening. It said that the Chief Advisor is regularly monitoring the progress of Khaleda Zia’s health and has instructed all concerned to ensure all necessary medical support.

The press wing said in a statement that the chief advisor has sought prayers from the countrymen for the speedy recovery of the three-time former prime minister. The government is ready to provide all necessary assistance so that there is no shortage in Begum Khaleda Zia’s treatment.

Describing Khaleda Zia as a great inspiration to the nation during this time of democratic transition, the chief advisor said, ‘Her good health is very important for the country.’ He also instructed all concerned to be ready at all times through all necessary support and coordination.

Khaleda Zia, who is almost 80 years old, has been suffering from various complications including arthritis, diabetes, as well as kidney, liver, lung, and eye problems for a long time. She was taken to the hospital on Sunday night, November 23, on an emergency basis. She was admitted to the hospital after tests revealed an ‘infection’ in her lungs.

The next day, Professor FM Siddiqui, a member of Khaleda Zia’s medical board, told reporters that she (Khaleda Zia) had been suffering from frequent illnesses for the past few months. Several problems had arisen at the same time. That is why she was admitted to the hospital.

Professor FM Siddiqui also said that Khaleda Zia had a chest infection. She already had heart problems. Since both the heart and lungs were affected simultaneously, she was having severe breathing problems. That is why the doctor said that she was taken to the hospital very quickly.

BNP leaders and activists in front of the hospital
BNP leaders and activists are arriving in front of Evercare Hospital in the capital to inquire about the physical condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

When I went to the hospital last night, I saw several leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates standing there. In addition, media personnel were also seen there.

Professor Asif Nazrul, the interim government’s legal, judicial and parliamentary affairs advisor, arrived at Evercare Hospital to see Khaleda Zia at 11:38 pm. He left the hospital at 12:06 pm. Apart from this, several senior BNP leaders came to the hospital to see the BNP chairperson at night. Among them, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Abdul Moin Khan were seen entering the hospital.

Abdul Moin Khan told reporters at the hospital gate at around 12:06 am, “The medical board met, the board reviewed her (Khaleda Zia’s) latest condition and they are taking whatever action is necessary.”

Responding to a question about what the doctor said about the BNP Chairperson’s health condition, Abdul Moin Khan said, “She (Khaleda Zia) has been kept under close observation and the parameters of her (Khaleda Zia) treatment are being studied and necessary measures are being taken.”

Khaleda Zia went to London on January 7 for advanced treatment. After staying in London for 117 days, she returned to the country on May 6. After that, she had to go to the hospital several times due to various physical complications.
