Had yesterday’s (Friday, November 21) earthquake lasted another ten seconds, disaster would have struck the entire Dhaka, said Rajdhani Unnayan Kartikharaja (RAJUK) Chairman Engineer Md. Riazul Islam. He made this statement while visiting the scene of three deaths after a railing collapsed in the Kasaituli area of Old Dhaka this morning (Saturday, November 22).
Riazul Islam said, “RAJUK sees the most urgent task at the moment to list the buildings damaged by the earthquake and take action. Later, a list of buildings at risk from earthquakes will be compiled.”
He said, “The number of buildings that are at risk among government schools, colleges and hospitals is 142. However, RAJUK does not yet have reliable information to assess the risk of private institutions.”
The RAJUK chairman said, “The owner of the building in Old Dhaka, whose railings collapsed, has been asked to provide relevant documents, including the building’s design approval. If they are not produced within seven days, RAJUK will take action according to the rules.”
