General elections in Myanmar, Dhaka requested to send observers

Myanmar’s military government is holding general elections next month. The junta government of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has requested Bangladesh to send observers to the elections, which are scheduled to be held in December.

According to diplomatic sources, Myanmar recently wrote to Bangladesh requesting to send election observers.

Myanmar’s junta government plans to legitimize the “controlled elections” by ensuring the participation of foreign observers. Therefore, Bangladesh wants to follow a policy of silence in responding to this request.

Incidentally, this is the first election held by Myanmar’s junta government since the military coup in February 2021. The first phase of the two-phase election will be held on December 28. The second phase of the election will be held on January 11, 2026.

Last August, Myanmar’s military government announced that the long-promised elections would begin on December 28. And in anticipation of the elections, the junta government lifted the nationwide state of emergency on July 31.
