Panic is growing due to the earthquake. Some students of Dhaka University and Dhaka Polytechnic Institute have been staying outside the halls all night due to allegations of insecurity in the residential halls of the academic campus. In the wake of the situation, the administration has declared Dhaka University closed until December 6. Students have been ordered to leave the halls by 5 pm today (Sunday, November 23).
Three earthquakes in 31 hours. In panic, students of several educational institutions, including Dhaka University, demanded safe residential halls.
Some students of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute have spent the night on the street in front of the hall, fearing damage to their residential hall in the earthquake and demanding renovation. They allege that the authorities have not taken steps to construct and renovate the hall despite it being at risk for a long time.
The students said that they are not in a position to accommodate three halls for boys and three halls for girls. In that case, temporary accommodation will have to be provided on the grounds of our Polytechnic Institute. Along with this, four halls will have to be demolished and rebuilt.
Meanwhile, the safety of Dhaka University’s residential halls needs to be inspected in the wake of the earthquake and other emerging situations. Therefore, the administration has declared the university closed for 14 days. At the same time, students have been instructed to leave the halls by 5 pm today.
However, a section of students took a stand in front of the VC building that night with three demands, strongly protesting the DU administration’s decision.
Dhaka University students said they will have to vacate the halls by 5 pm today so that it can be relaxed. They will not accept the arbitrary decision, they want a permanent solution.
The students expressed their anger, alleging the silence of DUCSU representatives over recent incidents at the university, including the earthquake. They also demanded the immediate provision of safe accommodation.
