Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz inaugurated two newly constructed commemorative arches — ‘Mukti Toran’ and ‘Swadhinata Toran’ — in the capital on Tuesday morning.
The Mukti Toran was inaugurated at Justice Syed Mahbub Morshed Road in Agargaon, while the Swadhinata Toran was opened in front of the Badda Buddhist Temple on Pragati Sarani. Both structures have been built to commemorate the anti-fascist July Movement.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Mukti Toran, Administrator Mohammad Ejaz said the structures serve as a reminder of the people’s collective struggle against fascism.
“These torans will remind us of the anti-fascist movement, in which people from all walks of life participated. They have been built not only to preserve that memory but also to enhance the beauty of our city,” he said.
He emphasized that civic responsibility extends beyond political movements.
“Just as we uprooted the oppressors from this country, we must now remove injustice and chaos from our city. Keeping the city dirty, covering it with posters, or destroying greenery is also a form of oppression. Protecting our city from these is our shared duty,” he added.
While inaugurating the Swadhinata Toran on Pragati Sarani, Ejaz highlighted the role of the area’s students and teachers during the July Movement.
“The teachers and students of private universities in this region participated with immense courage. This toran stands as a tribute to their contribution,” he said.
DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md. Moin Uddin, Regional Executive Officer (Region-3) Md. Julkar Nayan, Regional Executive Officer (Region-5) Md. Shadequr Rahman, along with other officials and employees, were present at both events.
