The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a case against Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury, a member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), on charges of allegedly acquiring illegal wealth worth nearly Tk 5 crore beyond his known sources of income. The anti-graft watchdog disclosed the information in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the ACC, Belal mentioned assets worth Tk 8.83 crore in his wealth statement. However, inquiry into his statement revealed evidence of assets totalling Tk 13.43 crore in his name. This indicates that he concealed assets worth Tk 4.60 crore in his declaration.
“The inquiry also proved that while serving as a public official, Belal abused his position and amassed wealth amounting to Tk 4.97 crore through irregularities and corruption beyond his known sources of income,” it read.
