Teachers announce ‘long march to secretariat’ as strike continues

Teachers and staff of private educational institutions affiliated with the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme have announced a fresh protest initiative amid their ongoing strike, demanding, among other things, a 20 per cent rent allowance.

The group plans to hold a “Long March” from the Central Shaheed Minar to the Secretariat at 12 noon on Tuesday, October 14.

Organisers confirmed that all current protest activities—including the strike and sit-in demonstrations in Dhaka—will continue until the government issues an official notification addressing their demands.

The announcement was made on Monday afternoon, 13 October, at the Central Shaheed Minar by Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, Member Secretary of the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalisation Alliance, speaking on behalf of the striking teachers.

“If no notification or official statement is issued by tonight, we will proceed with the long march tomorrow, and our strike and sit-in will remain in place,” Principal Azizi declared.

He criticised the government for its perceived indifference, stating, “The children of ministers and advisers do not study in private MPO-affiliated schools—so they have no stake in our struggle. We have been neglected for far too long. This time, we will not back down. Teachers will only return to their classrooms once our demands are met.”
