Mahmudur Rahman Manna, the heavyweight candidate for Bogra-2 (Shibganj) constituency and president of Nagorik Oikya, lost his deposit in the 13th National Parliament election. He received 3,426 votes under the kettle symbol.
On Thursday (February 12) night, Bogra District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md. Taufiqur Rahman announced the results of the vote.
According to the election law, a candidate must secure at least one-eighth or 12.5 percent of the total valid votes to retain the security deposit. Accordingly, at least 30,476 votes were needed to maintain the security deposit in this seat. But Manna received only 3,426 votes, which is about 1.4 percent of the total valid votes.
BNP candidate Mir Shahe Alam won the Bogra-2 (Shibganj) constituency. He received 145,024 votes. His nearest rival, Abul Azad Mohammad Shahaduzzaman of Jamaat-e-Islami, received 93,548 votes.
According to information received from the office of the District Returning Officer, the total number of voters in Bogra-2 constituency is 3,42,155. Out of this, 2,43,802 votes were cast. 4,691 votes were canceled, which is 72.63 percent of the total voters.
It is worth noting that initially, the seat was given to Manna, the president of Nagorik Oikya, by the BNP. But later, the party nominated its own candidate. Later, Manna elected under his own party symbol instead of joining an alliance.
