Gambling ads abound, initiative to block Cricinfo in Bangladesh

The popular cricket website Cricinfo is the single largest online gambling advertiser in Bangladesh. The money generated from this advertising is not subject to any VAT or tax.

Considering the overall situation, the government has taken the initiative to close Cricinfo in Bangladesh. However, public opinion will be sought before that.

Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor at the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, made these remarks in a post on his Facebook ID around 1 am on Monday (October 13).

In the post, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab wrote, Cricinfo.com alone advertises the most gambling in Bangladesh’s cyberspace. Online gambling, its promotional advertisements, etc. are prohibited under the Bangladesh Cyber Security Act 2025. Bangladesh’s youth are being wiped out by the black clutches of gambling, and the country’s wealth is being smuggled.

He further wrote, “We have studied Cricinfo advertisements in several cricket playing countries including Australia and England, and found that online gambling advertisements are 100% absent there.”

Faiz Ahmed Tayyab wrote that the government has contacted Cricinfo regarding this matter, adding that the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) has sent an email to Cricinfo regarding this matter and a registered letter will be sent to them by post later.

According to the special assistant to the chief advisor, on the one hand, Cricinfo is breaking the law by illegally advertising gambling, and on the other hand, it has not paid any income tax or VAT to Bangladesh on the income from gambling advertisements before or after the law was passed.

Stating that initiatives are being taken to stop gambling advertisements, he said, “The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) will collect public opinion on whether the issue of blocking Cricinfo in Bangladesh should be considered if gambling advertisements are not stopped.”
