Chief Justice may administer oath to newly elected MPs on February 16

Chief Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury will administer the oath of office to the members of parliament elected in the 13th National Parliament election. He is likely to administer the oath on February 16. This information has been received from the National Parliament Secretariat.

Earlier, on February 5, Advisor on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Asif Nazrul had hinted at such a possibility. He explained the legal process of having the members of the 13th National Parliament take the oath since there was no speaker in the previous parliament.

Then the legal advisor said, “Our law states that if the Speaker and Deputy Speaker cannot administer the oath, then the person nominated by the President will administer the oath. This nomination will be made in consultation with the Chief Advisor. There is another provision – if this oath is not administered within three days, then the Chief Election Commissioner can also administer the oath.”
