Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, addressed the nation ahead of the 13th national parliamentary elections and referendum to be held on February 12.
In his speech delivered on Tuesday (February 10) evening, he called on the country’s political parties, candidates, and voters to uphold the true ideals of democracy.
In his speech, the chief advisor made a special appeal to all the rival candidates, saying, “Regardless of the election results, rise above personal or party interests and prioritize the larger interests of the nation. Just as victory is part of democracy, defeat is also an inseparable truth. After the elections, let us all dedicate ourselves to building a new, just and inclusive Bangladesh.”
Referring to the participation of 51 political parties and more than 2,000 candidates, including independents, in this election, Dr. Yunus said, “This is the largest number of party participation in any election so far. The total number of candidates, including independents, is more than 2,000. More candidates than this have almost never been seen in previous national elections.”
He said, “This election is not just another regular election. This is the country’s first national election after a mass uprising. This election is a constitutional expression of the people’s awakening against the long-standing anger, discrimination, deprivation and injustice. That demand from the streets is going to be expressed through your ballot today. Therefore, this election is a historical milestone in Bangladesh’s democratic journey.”
The chief advisor said, ‘Through this election, we are not just electing public representatives – at the same time, we are deciding which way Bangladesh will move. Will we be able to build a non-discriminatory, just and accountable state, or will we return to the old power-centered and uncontrolled circle – this referendum will answer this question.’
