Biker Awareness Society Bangladesh Forms 21-Member Convening Committee

The Biker Awareness Society Bangladesh (BASB), known in Bangla as Baachba, has announced the formation of its 21-member convening committee. The committee was constituted late Wednesday (26 November) at 11 p.m. during a meeting held at a hotel in the capital’s Khilgaon area.

Tanvir Aladdin has been appointed the Convener, while Zawhar Iqbal Khan will serve as Member Secretary. The joint conveners are Habibur Rahman Babu and Md. Sajjad Hossain. Other committee members include A.K. Azad, Imon Chowdhury, Shafik Saiful, Alm Shams, Ariful Amin Rizvi, Hasnain Ahmed Munna, Md. Shafiqul Islam, Kawsar Bakul, Fahad Hasan Kazmi, Monsur Ahmed, Abdus Salam Farazi, Farazi Ahmad Rofiq Baban, Mejbaho Mukul, Nur Alam Dulal, A.H.M. Akhtaruzzaman, Iftikhar Anupam, and A.K.M. Khairul Bashar Bulbul.

Before the committee formation, a brief discussion meeting was held, chaired by Tanvir Aladdin and jointly moderated by Habibur Rahman Babu and Md. Sajjad Hossain. Speakers at the event highlighted the alarming rise in motorcycle accidents in Bangladesh. They emphasized that two-wheelers pose significantly higher risks compared to four-wheeled vehicles.

According to 2024 data presented during the meeting, 2,570 people were killed in motorcycle accidents last year—averaging more than seven fatalities per day. Most victims were between 14 and 45 years of age, representing the country’s promising young population whose dreams and futures were tragically cut short. The speakers stressed that increased awareness among bikers and society could save countless lives.

The organization clarified that BASB is not an NGO and operates without external funding. It is a voluntary platform dedicated solely to raising awareness among bikers and their families. The newly formed body marks the beginning of its formal journey.

BASB representatives pointed out several key causes of bike accidents: reckless speeding, disregard for traffic laws, and failure to use helmets or other protective gear. They also cited lack of proper training and driving licenses, as well as structural issues such as poor road design, insufficient signage, and inadequate roadside lighting. Weak law enforcement and limited monitoring by authorities further contribute to the problem.

The Biker Awareness Society Bangladesh envisions a future where every biker in the country is responsible and safety-conscious. Under the slogan “Excess Speed, Excess Damage”, the organization aims to build a culture of rule-abiding riders and create a Bangladesh where not a single life is unnecessarily lost to motorcycle accidents.
