The United States is withdrawing all its troops from Syria. Last week, all US troops left a strategically important US base and handed it over to the Syrian government.
Reuters reported this information in a report citing the US media outlet The Wall Street Journal.
The United States has several military bases in Syria. These bases were established a decade ago during the rise of ISIS.
The international terrorist group Islamic State (IS) emerged in 2014 amid the civil war that began in Syria under former President Bashar al-Assad. Within a short period of its rise, IS established its own separate state by capturing vast territories in Syria and Iraq.
The United States deployed troops to Syria at that time to suppress ISIS. After the rise of ISIS in 2014, the United States sent 2,000 troops to Syria. Currently, there are about 1,000 US troops in various bases. All of them will be withdrawn in stages soon.
A senior US Defense Department official told the Wall Street Journal, "IS is a threat to global peace and stability. The United States is committed to eliminating this group and US forces are ready to respond to any threat from IS in the Middle East. When IS emerged in Syria, we sent troops to the country to assist the Syrian government in suppressing this group."
"Times have changed. There is a stable government in Syria, and the threat from ISIS is no longer as strong. So we have decided to withdraw troops from there. We have already brought back a group of troops and handed over the relevant military base to the Syrian government."
