Two U.S. Navy aircraft — a fighter jet and a helicopter — crashed into the South China Sea on Sunday afternoon after taking off from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, according to a statement from the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
The Navy identified the aircraft as an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet and an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter. Both were conducting routine operations at the time of the incidents.
All five crew members — three from the helicopter and two from the jet — were rescued safely and are in stable condition, the statement said.
“All personnel have been accounted for and are safe. The causes of the incidents are currently under investigation,” the Pacific Fleet added.
The two crashes reportedly occurred within 30 minutes of each other. The helicopter went down first, followed by the fighter jet. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The USS Nimitz, one of the U.S. Navy’s oldest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, is currently returning to its home port at Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state after a lengthy deployment in the Middle East. The carrier had been operating in the region throughout the summer in response to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial shipping vessels. This mission marks one of the Nimitz’s final deployments before decommissioning.
Recent months have seen several other U.S. naval aviation incidents. The USS Harry S. Truman, another American carrier deployed in the Middle East, experienced multiple accidents earlier this year.
In December, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg accidentally shot down a Truman-based F/A-18 jet. Later, in April, another Super Hornet slipped off the carrier’s hangar deck into the Red Sea.
Fortunately, none of these accidents resulted in fatalities, though investigations into those incidents are still pending.
The U.S. Navy has not released further details on the condition of the recovered aircraft or the environmental impact of the crashes.
An official inquiry has been launched to determine the causes behind the back-to-back incidents aboard the USS Nimitz.
