Stating that a provision has been made for a 'no' vote, Legal Advisor Professor Asif Nazrul said, "A provision has been made for a 'no' vote in a constituency where there is a single candidate. Voters can vote 'no' against a single candidate if they wish."
He made these remarks at a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium on Thursday (October 23) afternoon. The RPO Act was finally approved at the advisory council meeting.
He said, "You must remember the fake elections of 2014. There was one candidate in 154 seats. It was a rigged election. Such elections should not happen. If there is one candidate, the voters there will be able to vote no. If they do not like the candidate, they will vote no. Then there will be another election."
He also said that if there is an electoral alliance in the case of an alliance, even if it is part of the alliance, the election should be held under the symbol of the party so that voters get a clear idea of which party it is.
Regarding the postal ballot, Asif Nazrul said, those who are busy with election work, our law enforcement forces, presiding officers or officers who are busy with election work, millions of people are busy with election work, they did not have the scope to vote. We have made provisions that they will vote in postal ballot. Those of us who are expatriates will vote in postal ballot. Those who will be engaged in election activities will vote in postal ballot. Provisions have been made that the media can be present at the place of vote counting.
The legal advisor said that those who give money to political parties, whether it is a donation or a subscription, if it is 50,000 taka or more, it must be given through banking channels. The person who gives it must also submit his tax return.
He further said that the previous law had a provision that if there was a disturbance at a polling station in a constituency, the results of that polling station could be cancelled. Now, if the Election Commission feels that there have been so many irregularities in a constituency that the votes in the entire constituency should be cancelled, then the Election Commission can do that. That power has been given.
