There is no hope for Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot in the head, said Special Assistant Professor Dr. Sayedur Rahman of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He said that the next 72 hours are very risky. He gave this information to reporters while visiting Hadi, who is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital at around 9:30 pm on Friday (December 12).
Dr. Sayedur Rahman said, "The bullet that entered above the left ear and exited through the right side damaged Hadi's brain stem, which is considered a 'massive brain injury' in medical science."
The next 72 hours are extremely risky, and no new interventions will be made during this time.
"Hadi is now in 'very critical' condition and is at highest risk for the next 72 hours. He is currently on a ventilator, although doctors are not yet able to give any assurance of hope," he said.
Dr. Saidur said the bullet entered the head just above the left ear and exited through the right side.
In this trajectory, there was also injury to the brain stem, an important part of the brain that controls life-sustaining functions. We are considering this as a massive brain injury. No intervention is possible now. Efforts are being made to keep the patient on life support only.
He added that the patient is now being kept alive with artificial respiration. However, there is a little room for hope, the patient's body still has signs of life. During the operation, some attempts were seen to breathe on his own.
However, the path is not easy, said Dr. Saidur. He said, "Hadi went into shock once before the surgery."
Later, while being transferred to the ambulance, he started bleeding profusely from his nose and throat. However, it has been brought under control for now.
The special assistant also said that there is no situation to tell a hopeful story right now. The next decision will be taken after monitoring the situation.
Hadi was taken to Evercare Hospital by ambulance after 8pm yesterday. Zahid Raihan, head of the neurosurgery department at Dhaka Medical, gave a briefing about his physical condition in the evening. He told reporters, "Hadi had two cardiac arrests. He also suffered a lot of bleeding after the incident. We will not say anything hopeful about this patient. He is in the worst condition, but he is still alive. The rest is God's will."
Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said, "An investigation into the incident is underway. Efforts are being made to identify those involved in the incident by collecting and verifying CCTV footage from around the scene."
