BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman contested from Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 constituencies in the 13th National Parliament election and won both. According to the law, even if he is elected to more than one constituency, he can retain only one seat. In that case, he has decided to give up Bogra-6 constituency and take oath as the member of parliament from Dhaka-17 constituency. A letter in this regard has already been submitted to the EC.
This information was given by the BNP today (Monday, February 16). According to the law, after a person is elected to two seats, he must leave one seat within a specified period and vacate the remaining seat/seats in writing.
According to the RPO, Section 19(1)(b) provides that a person may stand for and be elected from more than one seat at the same general election. Section 19(2) provides that if a person is elected from more than one seat, he shall, within 30 days after the publication of the Gazette, state in writing which seat he wishes to retain.
If a decision is not made within the stipulated time, the Election Commission will take action according to Bangladesh law and the remaining seat(s) will be declared vacant.
