The Bangladesh Judicial Service Association has made two demands, including the appointment of security forces at the residence and travel times of judges in all courts in the country.
The judges have given 48 hours to meet their demands, otherwise they have said they will observe a simultaneous strike from next Sunday (November 16).
This demand was made in a statement signed by Bangladesh Judicial Service Association President Md. Amirul Islam and Secretary General Muhammad Mazharul Islam on Friday (November 14).
The judges' second demand is that strict action should be taken against the police members involved in negligence in ensuring the safety of the judge in the Rajshahi incident and in displaying unprofessionalism by illegally presenting the arrested accused to the media.
Judges have said they will observe a nationwide strike starting Sunday if their demands to ensure the working environment and overall security of judges are not met within the next 48 hours.
In a statement, the judges said that the Supreme Court has repeatedly written to the government to ensure security in every court or tribunal premises, courtrooms, judges' residences and vehicles in the country. But the government has not taken any visible steps.
The statement said that while members of the judiciary perform the most important and risky duties of the state, they and their families are insecure. The statement also said that there is no government housing and transportation system for all district-level judges. Judges in the chowki courts are forced to live in rented houses, travel by rickshaws and vans, and even walk.
The statement also said that all judges in the country will wear black badges at their workplaces on Sunday.
