BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman will return home from London soon, said BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed. He said this while talking to reporters after a meeting of the party's standing committee held at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital on Monday night. However, Salahuddin Ahmed did not say anything specific about when Tarique Rahman will return to the country.
Replying to a question about Tarique Rahman's return to the country, Salahuddin said, "He will come soon, Insha Allah. ’
BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting.
In September 2008, Tarique Rahman and his family went to London for better treatment. He has been there ever since. There were about hundreds of cases against Tarique Rahman. He was also convicted in five of these cases. However, BNP leaders claimed that these cases were politically motivated, all of which were fabricated. After the fall of the Awami League government in the 2024 mass uprising, Tarique Rahman was acquitted of all the cases one by one from the court through the legal process in the changed circumstances.
Referring to the BNP's standing committee meeting last night, Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the party's highest policy-making forum, said, "This is our regular meeting. We have discussed political discussions, election-based discussions, different strategies for election campaigning. ’
The meeting also discussed the current political situation in the country as well as the latest health condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital, another party leader said.
Asked about Khaleda Zia's health condition, Salahuddin Ahmed said his personal physician and party's standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain will inform the journalists and others concerned about the health of the three-time former prime minister.
