Electricity generation from three units of the Barapukuria coal-fired thermal power plant in Dinajpur has stopped.
Production completely stopped at 7:30 am on Monday (October 20).
According to relevant sources, three units of the Barapukuria coal-based thermal power plant with a capacity of 525 MW were operating using coal from Parbatipur mine in Dinajpur. The third unit with a capacity of 275 MW stopped generating electricity at 8:35 am on October 16. Five days later, on Monday (October 20), at 7:30 am, Unit No. 1 with a capacity of 125 MW also stopped generating electricity.
This concession, Unit No. 2, with a capacity of 125 MW, has been closed for four years and 8 months since November 2020 due to renovation work. As a result, the power generation of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant has now completely stopped. Due to the closure of three units, there is an extreme power crisis in agriculture and industry in the northern region. This has led to power outages in 8 districts.
Mominur Rahman, a resident of Saidpur town, said, "The electricity has been intermittent since Monday night, which has put us in extreme trouble. We are facing various problems due to the lack of proper electricity."
Chief Engineer of Barapukuria Coal-Based Thermal Power Plant Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique said, "The running units 1 and 3 have been shut down due to mechanical faults. Apart from that, production of unit 2 has also been stopped for repairs. It is not possible to start any of the three units until repairs are made. However, we are trying to solve the problem as soon as possible."
