There have been reports of heavy firing between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the border area. The incident took place late on Friday (December 5). Officials from both countries have confirmed the matter. No casualties have been reported so far in the incident.
Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani forces had attacked the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province, while a spokesman for the Pakistani prime minister alleged that Afghan forces had opened fire indiscriminately on the Chaman border.
Pakistani spokesman Musharraf Zaidi said Pakistan is on the highest alert and is committed to its territorial integrity and the security of its citizens.
The shooting comes after failed peace talks earlier in the week, although both countries agreed to maintain a fragile ceasefire.
The meeting, held in Saudi Arabia last week, was the latest step in ongoing talks brokered by Qatar, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, aimed at easing tensions following deadly border clashes in October.
Pakistan's allegations - Afghanistan-based militants have been carrying out attacks in Pakistan in recent times, including suicide attacks involving Afghan nationals.
However, Kabul denies the allegations, saying they are not responsible for the security situation inside Pakistan.
The October clashes on the border were the deadliest since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, killing many people.
