The government will provide protein-rich foods at subsidised prices to around one million low-income families across the country during the holy month of Ramadan, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku announced on Thursday.
He said the initiative—covering milk, eggs, meat and fish—has been undertaken in line with the government’s commitment to public welfare under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The programme is expected to have a positive impact on market price stability while directly benefiting ordinary consumers.
The state minister made the remarks while inaugurating a special Ramadan programme for the sale of milk, eggs and meat at affordable prices at the conference room of the Livestock Research Institute in Mohakhali.
He said all concerned must work with honesty and dedication to fulfil the Prime Minister’s commitments to the nation. “Through collective cooperation, we can move the country forward on the path of development and prosperity,” he added.
Support for Low-Income Families
Tuku noted that during Ramadan, some unscrupulous traders often raise prices, increasing hardship for low-income groups. The government’s initiative would help ease their suffering, he said, adding that there are plans to expand the programme in the future.
He also mentioned that, in line with the government’s electoral pledges, steps would be taken to introduce family cards, agriculture cards and health cards to strengthen social protection measures. He emphasised integrity, dedication and coordinated teamwork to meet public expectations.
Tribute to BNP Founders
Referring to the legacy of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the state minister said its founder, Ziaur Rahman, earned a place in the hearts of people through his service to the nation. He also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for her role in upholding democracy and citizens’ rights.
The programme was chaired by Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Dr Md Abu Sufian. Among the special guests were Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Abu Taher Muhammad Jaber, President of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) Mashiur Rahman, and President of the Bangladesh Cattle and Fattening Farmers Association (BCFFA) Mohammad Iqbal Hossain. Senior officials of the ministry and its departments were also present.
