The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has arrested five people, including the weapons used in the public shooting death of top terrorist Tariq Saif Mamun in the capital's Old Dhaka. Among those arrested are two shooters named Rubel and Ibrahim. It is learnt that the two, who worked as professional hired shooters, had fired at Mamun. They were arrested from the border area before fleeing to India.
On Tuesday (November 12), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Department, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said, "The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has recovered two pistols used in the sensational Mamun murder case in Sutrapur of the capital and arrested five people, including two shooters. Detailed information on this matter will be given at a press conference organized at the DMP Media Center tomorrow (Wednesday, November 12)."
Earlier, Mamun was shot dead in front of the National Medical College Hospital gate in Sutrapur, Old Dhaka, at around 11am on Monday (November 10). The murder took place on his way back from a court appearance.
Eyewitness and CCTV footage show that at 10:53 am, Mamun was running and trying to enter the hospital gate, when two armed men were shooting at him from behind. Within moments, the two fired multiple shots simultaneously from close range. After completing the killing mission within seconds, they quickly ran away to the left of the gate, slung their weapons around their waists.
Mamun was rushed to the National Medical in an injured condition. Later, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The autopsy report of the deceased Mamun showed that there were a total of seven bullet wounds on Mamun's body - one below the head, one on the left back, one on the right side of the chest, one on the left wrist, and one above the right wrist.
Police said that the deceased Tariq Saif Mamun was one of the top terrorists listed in the capital. He was one of the leaders of the 'Emon-Mamun Group'. He was once an associate of the notorious terrorist Sanjidul Islam Emon. There had been a long-standing dispute between Emon and Mamun over control and dominance of the criminal world. The name of another top terrorist Joseph came up in the discussion. The deceased Mamun was one of the main accused in the murder of Joseph's brother Tipu in Mohammadpur in 1997. The police also believe that Joseph may have been the victim of a target killing out of that anger.
